Usimamane Shares Why ‘Tai Lung’ Has Been His Most Emotionally Challenging Project Yet. Usimamane is pouring everything into his upcoming album Tai Lung, and judging by his latest revelation, the creative journey has been an emotional one.

The Umlazi-born rapper recently took to social media to open up about the personal weight of making the project, admitting that no other body of work has brought him to tears quite like this one. In a moment of reflection, he recalled how one of his close friends revisited his debut project, 20th: Days Before Maud, and pointed out the similarities between the emotional struggles he experienced then and what he is going through now.

“There’s no project that made me cry than this one I’m working on right now #tailung,” Usimamane wrote. “One of my dawgs showed me my first one and said ‘this one changed your life and you was cry stressing the same way, this one you forever good hle.’ I had to share it.”

His friend’s words appear to have offered some reassurance, reminding him that the difficult emotions and pressure surrounding his previous project eventually gave way to a career-changing moment. Now, he finds himself navigating a familiar process, only this time with a different level of experience and expectations.

Tai Lung has been in development for quite some time, with Usimamane previously making several changes to its direction. The project was first introduced through his G-Wagon Music: Baby Tai EP earlier in 2026, while the rapper has since scrapped multiple versions in pursuit of a sound that better represents his artistic vision. He has also expressed his desire to put South Africa at the centre of the conversation before fully exploring international opportunities.

Inspired by the character Tai Lung from Kung Fu Panda, the album is expected to explore themes of betrayal, loss, pressure and personal transformation. Usimamane has also teased an exciting list of collaborators, including Jacquees, Emtee, Blxckie and Tony Dayimane, among others. The project is shaping up to bring together the rapper’s signature trap sound and a more vulnerable side of his artistry.

There is also something significant about the comparison to 20th: Days Before Maud. The debut project played an important role in establishing Usimamane’s name in South African hip-hop, making his friend’s observation particularly meaningful. What once felt like overwhelming pressure eventually became a defining chapter in his career.

With Tai Lung, the rapper appears to be facing that same uncertainty again, but with the lessons and growth that came from his earlier experiences. If his latest confession is anything to go by, this is a deeply personal body of work that means far more to him than simply delivering another album.

For those eagerly anticipating Tai Lung, Usimamane’s latest update offers a glimpse into the emotional journey behind its creation. Sometimes, the projects that demand the most from an artist end up becoming the ones that define them.
