This week’s best sees artists expanding in unexpected new directions, from post-punk informed grunge to bad ass New Orleans bounce that, miraculously, samples Rihanna. These tracks feel bold, fearless, and honest – but don’t get it twisted, they fucking bang.

Petrol Station Pies – “Bela Lugosi“

Like the quintessential 21st century image of the vampire that the titular subject matter of Petrol Station Pie’s latest conjures, this track lurks in the shadows. Paying reference to Bauhaus’ seminal post-punk magnum opus, “Bela Lugosi” sees Petrol Station Pies explore a murkier, goth inspired sound full of distortion and synths. Written after a jarring home invasion, “Bela Lugosi” explores spaces you might not fully understand, and ultimately reckoning with the monsters you might invite across your threshold.

Muzi – “Uhlanga” feat. Zoë Modiga

“Uhlanga” is the Zulu word for reeds and in Nguni mythology that’s where people come from, a Garden of Eden of sorts. On this lush track, Muzi imagines what that early world creation process would sound like, which is why the song starts the way it does, in a heavy storm. The addition on Zoë Modiga, a Mother Earth figure in this scenario, adds a powerful dynamic to this layered composition, making it a stand out both sonically and visually.

Tall Thief – Boy In The Frame

The latest from dream-pop artist Tall Thief is the sort of track that takes hold of you and twirls you around in endless circles through it’s fantastical, kaleidoscopic universe. It’s bold, effervescent palete of lo-fi shoegaze and starry eyed indie fuzz is both bonkers and comfortingly nostalgic, but its the earnest vulnerability of how the story of Boy In The Frame is told that makes the track absolutely captivating, and excellent.

Kozo Zwane – See My Grace

Zwane’s debut single is an emotive genre-defying work shaped by personal struggle, spiritual reflection, and years of artistic evolution. The single exists in a space between folklore and spiritual music, textured with organic instrumentation, atmospheric layers, and an intimate vocal delivery. The result is a meditative, immersive listening experience that feels grounded in earthly struggle yet lifted by something transcendent.

Long Story Short – who knew?

The first single since the band’s debut EP introduces Long Story Short’s brand of indie-rock filtered through a pop lens. It’s a gentle, well crafted contemplation on the end of a relationship, exploring the feeling of what it’s like to go your separate ways, only to see that the other person’s “way” seems to be working out a bit better than your own situation.

Money Badoo – RUDEBOI

The fact that Money Badoo managed to clear a Rihanna sample is a testament to the Berlin based rapper and singer’s level of bad ass, and “RUDEBOI” is a track absolutely dripping in that same tenacity. The hyperpop, New Orleans bounce banger builds itself around the familiar hook of Rihanna’s 2009 hit, but Badoo makes it entirely her own, delivering a club ready anthem that will have dance floors shaking ass for the rest of time.

CHXRL – killer

“Killer” rides the line between excitement and hesitation, capturing the rush of falling in love shadowed by the fear of being left behind. The song leans into the emotional push and pull of a new relationship before the ultimate reveal of true intentions—unravelling the quiet tension of not knowing whether someone is there to stay or to leave, and how that uncertainty can distort everything you feel.
